Bukavu, the capital of Sud-Kivu Province, is located in eastern DR Congo. The city serves as the gateway to the park and is situated on the south-eastern edge of Lake Kivu, across the Ruzizi River from Cyangugu in Rwanda.
You can reach Bukavu by bus or by car from Rwanda via the Cyangungu border, from Burundi via the Uvira border, and from Goma via the road along Lake Kivu (check latest security information for the latter).
Several operators travel daily between Goma and Bukavu, with tickets for rapid boats (2 hours) costing on average USD 50 and slower but larger boats (6 hours) costing between USD 8-25. Tickets can be bought at the ports in Goma and Bukavu and it is recommended that you get these at least one day in advance.
The nearest international airports are in Goma (2 hours by boat), Bujumbura, Burundi (3 hours by road) and Kigali, Rwanda (6 hours by road). It is also possible to fly to Entebbe Airport in Uganda, which is another 9 hours by road from Kigali.
To the Park
KBNP is located 30 km west of Bukavu. Follow the road to Kavumu and, at Miti, take a left and keep going straight until you reach the visitor centre.
Most visits to the park are organised by local, regional and international tour operators as well as hotels. Local operators are useful for organising gorilla permits and arranging local transport, and include:
